Yesterday in Albania was held the fourth round for the new President elections, where MPs voted for Ilir Meta’s only candidacy, proposed by the SMI and backed by the Socialist Party.
Newly elected president in his speech said he will make the utmost effort so the situation in the country it doesn’t heat up like in Macedonia. Meta said he is always ready to stand in favor of democracy rather than state posts and that he accepted the President’s post to work for an established democracy. The new President said he would do the impossible to deserve the trust given from the MPs.
The current President ,Bujar Nishani , through a phone call congratulated the elected President Ilir Meta and also wished the President for a successful fulfillment of the mission as Head of the State.
US Embassy in Tirana has also welcomed Ilir Meta’s election as president.
“The U.S. Embassy congratulates Speaker Ilir Meta on his election as the next President of Albania. We look forward to working with Albania’s leaders to address the country’s challenges and create opportunities for the Albanian people.”-US Embassy says.
Parliament yesterday approved its candidacy for this post with 87 votes in favor. Parliament’s session for the presidential election started yesterday at 17:10. Ilir Meta was the only candidate for this post and received unanimous support from the Socialist Party.
Ilir Meta served as Prime Minister from 1999-2002 and has also been a Parliament Speaker. Before elected as a President was the Socialist Movement for Integration leader.
Meta will be the President of the Republic of Albania during the 2017-2022 period.
