For many countries, fertility decline has been dramatic and quick.
The shift from the average fertility rate of five children per woman to below the population replacement rate took two centuries in France but only 34 years in Albania – the World Bank states with special research on the effects that the aging population has on the long-term economic development.
The total fertility rate (TFR) has declined in many countries in the region, as well as in Albania. -below 2.1 children per woman – which is the necessary substitution rate to keep the populations at current levels, without considering the immigration.
Albania had a rate of 1.5 children per woman in 2016.Meanwhile it is expected to see another drastic reduction on the fertility rate.
