St. Athanasius Monastery in Albania, a cultural monument of the first category with a history of over 400 years, has been added to the list of destroyed landmarks of Albanian cultural heritage.
There had been extraordinary damage done to its roof, thus affecting the part of the frescoes. The monastery dates to 1797, but local residents insist that this date coincides with its second reconstruction, as according to them, the monastery is much older.
Inside the monastery, the walls were decorated with rare icons representing an invaluable cultural miracle, while the northern part of the temple were rooms built for monks.
Residents declared that the state institutions were aware months ago about these risks and nothing was done to address them.
